Rhododendron, Olga Mezitt
One of the hardier small leaf PJM-type Rhododendrons, Olga is a solid mass of pink for weeks in early spring. Dome-shaped trusses of funnel-shaped bright pink flowers burst open from the branch tips in late April, weeks earlier than large leaf Rhododendrons, and last for weeks. The small leaves are evergreen, but turn a beautiful reddish color in late fall. Grows slowly into an upright, rounded form. Spent flower clusters may be carefully pinched back before new leaves emerge or plant may be sheared at this time. To ensure success this plant must have moist, loose, acid soil that drains well and will fail in wet, heavy, poorly draining clay. Because of its small leaves this Rhododendron will tolerate full sun locations, but does its very best with protection from winter sun and wind. Flower bud hardy to -25F.
